There are times when one has to believe that the entire FCC scheme for frequency allocation needs a re-do. The latest: read Monica Alleven’s article in FierceWireless re the 2.5 GHz space. This article was partly the outgrowth of a question to a T-Mobile executive for his take on 2.5 GHz and 5G. Read the article for details; then re read it. After your 4th read, maybe you’ll come to the same conclusion I did: spectrum allocation, like the current tax code, is a rat’s nest of rules and regulations that could probably use a complete re-do.
The efficient allocation of a finite resource – spectrum – will be critical to 5G and advanced wireless services over the next 20 years. I’m not sure the FCC will ever be up to the task.
Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
The Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where.”
The Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
